As spooky seasonal highlights go, the White Mischief Halloween balls are very hard to beat. Held again at The Scala, the vintage-themed party has for a number of years taken over every inch of the building with an impressive bill of onstage cabaret,  as well as other interactive acts scattered across the floors and stairwells. As with all White Mischief events, the guests’ outfits are usually worth the price of entry alone: many homemade costumes take the night’s steampunk ethos to heart.

Break out the warpaint: the costumes and outfits are always a highlight at White Mischief events.

The entertainment this year is again superb. Host Dusty Limits will introduce a superb cast of performers. Names announced so far include gentleman juggler Mat Ricardo, mime artist Johann Lippowitz, hoopster Emily Rose and burlesquers Cherry and Ruby. Fast-rising pair The Roustabouts are once again on DJ duty, with bands Jarmean? and Oompah Brass to keep the joint rocking between acts. Guests searching for quieter ways to pass the time can enjoy storytelling from Dreamfired and a magic lantern show from Simon Heard.

Want a taste of the evening’s tunes? See ukelele-led steampunk band Jarmean? in Bad Penny, directed by Alex Sufit (AKA Lexitricity). The award-winning video features ArtWank producer and This Is Cabaret columnist Ophelia Bitz in strident bawdy wench mode.

White Mischief: Phantasmagoria Hallowe’en Ball takes place at The Scala on Saturday, October 27th. See www.whitemischief.info for tickets, further dates and other details.
