It’s fair to say The Folly Mixtures had a rather super smashing sparkling 2013 and are looking forward to a rather splendid 2014. With Wam Bam leaving Cafe de Paris last year, the brand new Saturday night extravaganza Showtime Cabaret there will feature the Follys as resident dancers as part of a variety showcase featuring the very best of London’s cabaret , circus, comedy and burlesque acts.
Last year, they were nominated for Best Burlesque Act 2013 at the London Cabaret Awards, went on a nationwide tour and performed so many sell-out shows at their Madame Jojo’s residency that they’ve had to introduce an extra night per month. They also suffered the loss of a Folly, which may seem like a bad thing if she hadn’t been poached by Las Vegas. On top of all that, they had gigs in Latvia, the Seychelles and revisited Russia. All in all, not a bad year.
So what are the girls looking forward to in 2014? As well as the swanky new residency at the Cafe De Paris, they have swelled in ranks with the cute Ella Boo and a host of new Folly Swings, girls trained up and ready to shake a tailfeather whenever a Folly is needed. We catch up with veteran Folly Ooh La Lou to find out more.
What is the concept of the new Showtime Cabaret show?
Showtime Cabaret is a celebration of all things extravagant and the Cafe de Paris ballroom will be filled to the rafters with a variety of cabaret , circus, comedy and burlesque – the ultimate excuse to leave your inhibitions at home, throw caution to the wind and get lost in a world of showmanship.
What will The Folly Mixtures be bringing to the show? Do you have any new routines in mind?
We will be bringing a ton of fun with bags of personality, everything The Folly Mixtures are know for. A bit of cheekiness, a lot of giggles, some hot moves and plenty of glitter! We do have something just for Cafe De Paris up our sparkly sleeves, and some fabulous new costumes, but you’ll have to come and see for yourselves to find out more.
How will Cafe De Paris compare to other venues like Madame Jojo’s?
We love working in all types of venues but the Cafe De Paris is beautiful and we’re excited to put our stamp on the corner of the new show. There are more levels of audience to play with and we are looking forward to a fabulous staircase to descend down dramatically. We’ve always been blessed with fun, “up for it” audiences and are excited to meet the crowds at Cafe de Paris.
What are your big plans for 2014?
We’re multiplying! We have taken on some great girls from the circuit who are currently in Folly training camp. It will be the first time that we can perform in three places in one night, a new venture to make the brand bigger and better whilst keeping individual personality and charm in each girl, which is so important to us. We’re bursting at the seams to tell you all who is in our extended Folly Family and are announcing them on our Facebook and Twitter pages. We are also continuing with the UK tour of ‘An Evening Of Burlesque’ and are just about to visit Belaruse and Lithuania with the show. We are also super excited to be performing at ‘European Gay Ski Week’ in Geneva and of course, we will also be returning to Madame Jojo’s on the first Wednesday of each month for our sell our residency which we are very proud of. It’s going to be another busy and exciting year.
Show Time Cabaret, Café de Paris, London WC1 0XX. Saturday, 18:00 – 22:30. £25.00 – £85.00. Tickets can be purchased here.
